Bamboo massage dates back to when the Chinese recorded their history on thin pieces of bamboo long before paper was invented. The material was used in many ways, ranging from musical instruments to artwork, elaborate decorations, and agricultural tools. Since bamboo as part of everyday life, it didn’t take long before it was used as a form of creative and spiritual expression that soon took on ritual and healing connotations.

Bamboo symbolised life energy, prosperity, longevity, sexuality, and fertility in Chinese, Indonesian, and Japanese culture. In China, stalks of bamboo still symbolise eternal youth, prosperity, peace and strength. What appears like a new technique, bamboo massage, has ancient roots and deeper associations than simply bodywork. Today, bamboo massage is promoted at high-end spas as an exotic treatment for massage therapists as a new tool, but bamboo is much more than a new accessory.

Bamboo massage is a technique that incorporates bamboo stalks of varying lengths and diameters to perform a deep-tissue massage. Some therapists combine elements of shiatsu, traditional Chinese medicine, Thai massage, lymphatic drainage, and Ayurveda into the treatment, and sticks are usually heated or essential oils incorporated into the massage. The massage promotes circulation, sensory nerve perception, and lymphatic drainage and provides a greater sense of relaxation and well-being. An added benefit for the therapist is that using the bamboo sticks will reduce stress and strain on their hands and fingers while still allowing for deeply penetrating manoeuvres.
