In the 1950’s, medical researcher Eva Wittgenstein noticed that a medicinal product containing Dihydroxyacetone could tan the outer layers of skin temporarily in a harmless way. She discovered the process by accident when she was studying Dihydroxyacetone as an oral drug for assisting children with Glycogen Storage Disease. Whilst she was conducting the study, she noticed that when the medicine splattered, it stained patient’s bodies but not clothes. She then tested it on her own skin before the solution was created a mass-produced for selling.
