Hot stones massage dates to around 5000 years ago in India, when they used placement of stones on the body to relieve muscle related pain. In India healers would use flat rocks from the riverbed to massage and help with any discomfort in the body.

Hot stones massage is a treatment that uses smooth basalt stones to reduce stress, anxiety, and muscle related pain. The endorphins created by hot stones releases feel good hormones to reduce stress. The ancient Romans and Greeks also used stones in massage and body work as they believed that the heat from the stones would help to heal muscle soreness when treating competing Gladiators or Army Soldiers.

In 1993 Mary Nelson created a sequence of movements and a specific treatment protocol using both hold and cold stones. Hot stones are not only beneficial to the body but also the mind as heat helps to create a sense of wellbeing and can soothe the nervous system. They are heated up using a hot stones heater or a specialist heating element and can also be used in deep tissue massage to aid in the break of lactic acid and better lymph drainage from the muscle tissue, sports people also find the treatment quite beneficial too.
